Historic Railyards Celebrates Major Construction Milestone

KPRS recently joined LDK Ventures and project partners to celebrate a significant milestone at Sacramento's historic Railyards Central Shops District with a beam-signing and topping-out ceremony marking the placement of the final structural steel beam.

The event signifies an important step forward in the adaptive reuse of the former 150-year-old transcontinental railway structure that is being renovated and restored into a new concert venue. Once complete, the venue will serve as an anchor destination within the larger Railyards redevelopment, drawing visitors to the district and helping activate a vibrant new mixed-use neighborhood.

Originally constructed as a paint shop for locomotives and railcars, the historic building played a role in the development of the nation's first transcontinental railroad. The site also housed offices used by railroad pioneer Leland Stanford, making preservation of the structure a key component of the project.

One of the most complex aspects of construction has been integrating a new steel structure within the existing historic building. To help navigate the challenges of preserving the original brick walls and metal trusses while introducing modern building systems, the project team conducted a detailed survey of the structure and developed a 3D model to support planning and coordination efforts. The model has become an essential tool for resolving dimensional variations, connection details, and constructability challenges throughout the restoration process.

The topping-out ceremony traditionally marks the completion of a building's structural framework and serves as an opportunity to recognize the teams bringing the project to life. More than 80 attendees participated in signing the final beam before it was lifted into place atop the structure.

As the first project in a phased effort to revitalize Sacramento's Railyards, the future concert venue represents a major investment in preserving history while creating new opportunities for community gathering, entertainment, and economic growth. The project will help set the stage for the district's evolution into a walkable urban destination featuring residential, office, retail, and entertainment spaces.
